D. J. Sangvi College

D. J. Sangvi College:

With the advent of liberalization in the early 90s, India opened the doors of her economy to foreign players. This influx of global players into the Indian market and their emphasis on using state-of-the-art technologies created a spurt in the demand for contemporary engineering courses in the suburbs of India's commercial capital Mumbai.
Never one to ignore the demands of the industry and academic fraternity, the Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal, with prior approval from the University of Mumbai, the Government of Maharashtra, the Directorate of Technical Education and the All India Council for Technical Education, decided to establish a benchmark-setting engineering college. The Dwarkadas J. Sanghvi College of Engineering, named after Shri Dwarkadas J. Sanghvi, was born.

Sardar Patel College of Engineering

Sardar Patel College of Engineering:

Sardar Patel College of Engineering (SPCE) is an engineering college in India. It is located in Andheri, a suburb of Mumbai. It is affiliated to Mumbai University and offer courses leading to graduate (Bachelor) and post-graduate (Master) degrees in Engineering. It is one of the most reputed engineering colleges in India and part of it (aided wing) is supported through the government.

History:

In 1957, the Bharatiya Bhavan conceived the idea of establishing an engineering college in Mumbai. The Engineering Personnel Committee of the Planning Commission had made certain recommendations for the establishment of new engineering colleges and polytechnics, in order to increase the technical manpower in the country. The Government of India accordingly had initiated a liberal policy for setting up private engineering colleges in the states. The proposal of the Bhavan to start an engineering college was favourably received by both the central and state governments.

Nehru & Junarkar The total outlay of this project was Rs.70 lakhs. The central and state governments contributed Rs.20 lakhs and Rs.10 lakhs respectively while the Bhavan contributed Rs.28 lakhs. The Sardar Patel Memorial Hall Committee and the Nizam's Charitable Trust donated Rs.1 lakh each and the remaining amount of Rs.10 lakhs was collected by means of grants, donations and advertisement revenues.

The foundation stone of the college was laid on the 17th of September 1961 by Shri Y.B. Chavan (the then chief minister of Maharashtra who later became the defence minister of India) who had taken a keen interest in the fulfillment of the project. Sardar Vallabhai Patel was closely associated with the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and in 1946 he was elected an honorary member of the Bhavan in recognition of the keen interest he took in the activities of the Bhavan. It was thus decided that naming the Engineering College after the late Shri Sardar Patel would be a fitting tribute to the "Iron Man" of India.

SPCE was founded in 1962 and inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru. At the time, it was only the fourth Engineering Institute in the Bombay region after VJTI, UDCT and IIT Bombay. The college started with three disciplines of engineering - Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. Electronics and Computer Engineering were started in 1995, Information Technology (IT) in 1998 and Electronics and Telecommunication in 2005. These four courses were privately funded by the college management whereas the Civil, Mechanical and Electrical courses are provided funds by the government.

Mumbai University recognized the college as two separate institutions - SPCE (Aided) offering Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering courses and SPCE (Unaided) offering Electronics, Computer Science and IT engineering courses now known as Sardar Patel Institute of Technology (SPIT). The unaided section was formally separated from its parent college in 2005 and established as Sardar Patel Institute of Technology (SPIT). However, the day-to-day operations of the two institutions is often a joint effort as they share some common facilities. The students of the two colleges mingle freely in extracurricular activities.
